Location:

Aubigny Communal Cemetery is south of the village of Aubigny-en-Artois and the Cemetery Extension is behind it. The village of Aubigny-en-Artois is approximately 15 kilometres north-west of Arras on the road to St. Pol. After turning into the village from the N.39 on the D.75, the Cemetery lies south on a road leading from the centre of the village.

  • Medals– The Military Medal, British War, and Victory Medals with Canadian Memorial Cross. Also the Cap Badge of 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles. All attributed to Pte. John Edwards. The 'Military Medal' was awarded for his part in the first trench raid on the Vimy front in late 1916. The citation is as follows: "This man volunteered for a supplementary party to assist in a raid on the night of Nov.: 20th, 21st. The party of which Pte. Edwards was a member bombed out a considerable section of the German Line and by creating a diversion facilitated the entry of our main raiding party into the German Lines at another point. He had previously reconnoitered the ground and on the night in question led the party to the German wire. He then took charge of the special bombing party which bombed out fifty yards of German trench and by his intimate knowledge of the German trench and craters in the vicinity, the whole of the party was enabled to return without a casualty and valuable information was obtained by the party." (LG 19/2/17) Pte. Edwards was fatally wounded (GSW in both legs) on December 24, 1916 and died of his wounds at No. 30 Casualty Clearing Station the next day; Christmas Day. (from donors collection)
