He graduated from Kelvington High School. His father, Thomas fought in the First World War with the 15th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, service number 511072.
Thomas was a gunner with the 1st Light Anti-Aircraft Battery – NPAM – in Shilo, Manitoba, from June 28, 1939 to April 23, 1940.
He had service in Canada and in Great Britain. He had 835 days of service, including 525 days overseas.
1939-1945 Star, Europe Star, Defense Medal, General Service Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and Operation Wings.
