Grave Reference:

VI. G. 4.

Location:

VLAMERTINGHE NEW MILITARY CEMETERY is located 5 Km west of Ieper town centre and to the south of the village of Vlamertinge. Vlamertinge itself is located along the Poperingseweg. (* Vlamertinge is the modern spelling of Vlamertinghe) From Ieper town centre the Poperingseweg (N308), is reached via Elverdingsestraat then straight over two small roundabouts in the J. Capronstraat. The Poperingseweg is a continuation of J. Capronstraat and begins after a prominent railway level crossing. The cemetery itself is located after turning left in the village of Vlamertinge onto the Hugo Verriestraat. This road crosses a railway and the main road N38, where the name of the street changes to Bellestraat. The VLAMERTINGHE NEW MILITARY CEMETERY lies 200 metres on the left hand side of the Bellestraat, after crossing the N38. Visitors to this site should note a grassed access path which runs between two houses on the street front and is unsuitable for vehicles.

  • War Diary– It is rare to see a Private listed by name in a War Diary (1st Labour Battalion = 1st Infantry Works Battalion) but even rarer to see that they listed his place of burial.
  • Document– This is the CWGC GRRF (Graves Registration Report Form) that matches the image of the war diary page showing the burial location of Private Robert Holmes Leslie at the Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery.
  • Circumstance of Death Card– To complete the entry for Private Robert Holes Leslie, this is from the Circumstance of Death File which matches the Graves Registration and War Diary entries. it states: "Killed in Action - The camp at which he was stationed on September 1st, 1917 was shelled by an enemy high velocity gun, and about 3 A.M. a direct hit was made on the dugout in which he was sleeping killing him instantly".
