Baptized Marie-Joseph-Albert-Roméo Côté. Son of Paul-Victor Côté and Délina Lépine, of Québec. Married to Marie-Jeanne Robitaille in 1909, of Montréal and of Québec. He stated being born on 2 February 1889 when he enlisted.

Enlisted in the 150th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, he arrived in Liverpool, England, on 6 October 1916. Transferred to the 22nd Battalion on 5 December. On the evening of 28 April 1917, the Germans bombarded with gas shells. The battalion lost 3 men killed and 11 wounded. One shell fell on a tent housing these men. Côté's wife was widowed on the very day she gave birth to a son.
