He was born in Pagoda Anchorage, Foochow, Fujian, China, to a British father and a Japanese mother.
Son of British Merchant Navy Captain Samuel Lewis Shaw and Ellen O'Sea Matsumuro from Tokyo, Japan.
On 10 December 1941, the Shinai was captured by the Japanese armed forces. Shaw was interned in a prison camp at Kutching, Surrawak, Borneo, Malaysia, where he died of heart failure on 13 February 1943.

Labuan War Cemetery is on the small island of Labuan in Brunei Bay off the coast of north- west Borneo. It is best reached by air from Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital, from where there are daily flights. There are also flights from Singapore and Manila. The cemetery lies on the right side of the Jalan Tanjong Batu road, which leads from the airport to the town, approximately 0.5 kilometres from the airport and about 3 kilometres from the Island's town, known as Victoria. There is a Caretaker residing on site who can help locate individual graves.
