Of the more than 600 planes that flew the mission, George's Halifax was one of the 47 that never returned. It was a night time raid over Berlin on Aug 31, 1943. Their plane was spotted by search lights and brought down by Flak. He was considered one of the 'old guys' in a flight crew because he was in his mid-twenties at the time.
