Son of Geoffrey Percy and Winifred May Osler. Husband of Vera Jeanne Osler.

Osler was a well-known athlete and was a former schoolmaster at Brentwood College. He and his parents moved to Victoria in 1912. He was educated at Shawnigan Lake School and Oak Bay High School, later obtained a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Washington. When the war broke out, he was working on his Phd at the University of British Columbia .
