 BROKEN FLIGHT
Not, broken lad, for you, - this lonely flight
That leaves our spirits chilled with bitter cold
of anguish. Hearts grown sad and swiftly old
Because we cannot scan so fair a height.
Was there no beacon - searching from the earth -
To catch the gleam of silver-shining wing?
Did Heaven's beam, among the stars that swing,
Lead safely to a welcome, glowing hearth?
Skies there are free from evil birds that prey
On lives so young and lovely in our sight;
Your love so fond - your spirit true and gay,
Soared high to reach the stars beyond the night;
But groping still - along our dusty way -
We search the skies, above a broken flight.

NOTE "In going through some family memorabilia,I came across the following poem written by Miss Leila Bishopp Martin to commemorate the sacrifice of her beloved nephew: Flying Officer Martin Palmer Northmore, 94 Squadron., Royal Canadian Air Force,who died in action over North Africa October 24, 1943. Martin Northmore was my uncle and Miss Martin my great-aunt."
