Durnbach Cemetery – photo of Durnbach Cemetery (CWGC) On August 12/13, 1944, a force of 297 aircraft - 191 Lancasters, 96 Halifaxes, 10 Mosquitos - took part in a raid on the Opel motor factory at Rüsselsheim. Unfortunately, most of the bombs fell in open countryside south of the target (RAF History). Thirteen Lancasters and 7 Halifaxes were lost, (6.7 per cent of the force). Serving in 578 (RAF) Squadron, P/O Pearson was the pilot of Halifax NA 604 which did not return from this operation. Also killed was P/O (AG) J. P. Birmingham, age 20, from Stratford, Ont. The remainder of the crew were non-Canadians.
