Son of George Henry Catheralle and Elka Krist Jana Jonsdóttir Bergson, of New Westminster, British Columbia.

During the First World War, his father, George served with the 90th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force in France and he was wounded in action.

He served in Canada and Great Britain. He had 845 days of service, including 401 overseas.
