Baptized Joseph Henri Gauthier. Son of Joseph Arthur Gauthier and Élise Sirois of Montreal, Quebec. Brother of Acting Corporal Gilberte Gauthier, service number W-4681, of the Canadian Women's Army Corps (CWAC).
He previously served in the Régiment de Maisonneuve – NPAM – serial number 1559, from March 1, 1938, to May 10, 1939. Extremely undisciplined soldier. He enlisted on October 19, 1939, in Montreal with the Royal 22nd Regiment, Company B, serial number E-4371. He sailed for Great Britain on December 9 and arrived in Greenock, Scotland, on the 18th. From July 11, 1940, to April 24, 1941, he served in the 3rd Reconnaissance Squadron. On April 23, 1941, he was transferred to the Royal 22nd Regiment. Incorporated into Force M on June 15, 1943, he set sail to take part in Operation Husky. On July 10, he landed on the beaches of Pachino, Sicily. He was killed in action during an assault on Mount Santa Maria, near Catanenova, where he was buried on August 1 before being exhumed and reburied in Agira. He had served 1,378 days, including 1,326 days overseas.
