  • Photo of Newton Hanlan– Born to the family of Samuel Newton Hanlan and Mildred (Cook) Hanlan, husband of Margaret Elizabeth Hanlan and father of Harry Hanlan of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Newton came from a family of eleven ; seven boys and four girls. Newton was the ninth child , he was soft spoken and always there to give a helping hand. He loved life and his family.
In 1942 four of the Hanlan boys went together and joined the Military.
Newton Hanlan went to Ortona, Italy where he died. Newton was injuried in Ortona just after Christmas 1943, As we know it Newton went to Bari hospital where he later died of complications Feburay 20, 1944 at the age of 26. Newton is buried in the Bari War Cemetery, Italy, along with other Verterns. When he died his son Harry was just over a year old so he never got to know his father. It was a huge loss for the Hanlan Family. His Sister Doreen still has his last Italian Christmas card that he sent her saying: hi Sis from Newty.
In 1999 the Weslock legion, in Alberta honoured all the boys that went to war in 1944-1999. Book was called (D-Day plus 55 years, A salute to Westlocks and Area War Veterans). All four Hanlan’s pictures were found on page 10 in the book .
Newton’s Father (Samuel Hanlan from Alberta) also served in the First World War. (Great European War – Pte Samuel Newton Hanlan ( known as Newty) B. Company 151st Overseas Battalion C.E.F. Samuel enlisted at Fort Saskatchewan March 7th 1916). Wife- Mildred ( Cook ) Hanlan . Newton was born a few months after his father Samuel went to war.
