Burial Information

Cemetery:

CEUTA (SANTA CATALINA) MUNICIPAL CEMETERY
Spain

Grave Reference:

Patio 1. Row 5. Niche 855.

Location:

Ceuta is a small port on the African coast due south of Gibraltar. It is in Spanish Territory and visas are required to enter the town. It can be reached by daily boat from Gibraltar, or coaches from Tangier and Tetuan. There is one hotel of reasonably good standard. This cemetery, which overlooks the Straits of Gibraltar, is about 5 kilometres due east from Muelle Espana (Wharf), at the foot of Monte Hacho. The road leading to it is called Carrebera San Amaro and an unsurfaced track continues from this road for about 275 metres along the coast to the cemetery standing on a slight rise. The burials are in niches in what are termed 'Patios'. The 1939-1945 War casualties are buried in Patio 1, Row 5. They total 10, and this figure is made up by 3 sailors and 4 airmen belonging to the forces of the United Kingdom; 2 airmen belonging to the Royal Canadian Air Force and 1 airman of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Instead of a headstone, each grave is marked by a marble tablet shaped to fit the end of the niche, upon which the inscription is carved.
