Born 11 May 1884 in Ingersoll, Ontario. Son of Mrs. James Young of Spring Bank, Alberta. He enlisted in Calgary, Alberta on 2 January 1915. He stated he was a rancher and single.

Villers-Guislan is a village 16 kilometres south-south-west of Cambrai and 4 kilometres east of Gouzeaucourt, which is a large village on the main road from Cambrai to Peronne. VILLERS HILL BRITISH CEMETERY is one kilometre south-east of the village.
