Photo of Norman McLeod – His obituary in the Free Press reads as follows: Pte. Norman McLeod, Killed. The name of Pte. Norman McLeod, whose home address is Stornoway, Lewis, Scotland, appeared in the casualty lists a few days ago as killed in action on Sept. 2. He enlisted with a forestry battalion in Winnipeg, but later in England transferred to the Nova Scotia Highlanders. He spent some time in England in training, and proceeded to France in June of this year. The late Pte. McLeod leaves a widowed mother, who lives in Stornoway, Lewis, Scotland, five sisters and two brothers. One brother, D. R. McLeod, is resides in Selkirk, Man., and a sister, Miss Mary McLeod, is at present in Winnipeg. Pte. McLeod was a fine type of the Scottish Highlander. In his last letter, dated France, August 21, and written to his sister in Winnipeg, he said: "I hope you will keep a cheerful heart, and if the darkness does happen to get in, as it is liable to do with the best of us, open wide your door, and let the sunshine chase it out." It is a great comfort to his friends and relatives to know that he faced death with such a noble spirit.
