On February 23, 1943, the Eulima was sailing with convoy ON-166 when she was hit by a torpedo launched from U-186 at about 7:40 a.m., about 310 miles (500 km) south of Cape Race, Newfoundland. At 11:30 a.m., the wreck was sunk by a coup de grace from the submarine, position 46°48'N/36°18'W. The captain, 52 crew members and nine gunners lost their lives. The only survivor was taken prisoner and interned in Bremen, Germany, until the end of the war.
