On November 5, 1940, the Kenbane Head was part of convoy HX-84 which was attacked with guns by the German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer some 755 nautical miles (869 miles/1,398 km) south-southwest of Reykjavik, Iceland. Despite the smoke screen provided by the sole escort, HMS Jervis Bay, the merchant ship was sunk. It took the lives of 23 sailors.
