On November 1, 1942, the Elmdale was sailing with the TRIN-20 convoy, which was dispersed by a pack of German submarines, when she was torpedoed at 11:07 p.m. by U-174. She sank in seven minutes with 5 crew and one gunner 400 miles (644 km) east of St. Paul Rocks, Brazil, position 00°17'N/34°55'W. Her captain, 30 sailors and 5 gunners were rescued by the Brazilian merchant ship Therezina M. and landed at Forteleza, Brazil.
