Son of Patrick Dougall and Rachel Elizabeth Thorn Rae, of Cornwall, Ontario.

On November 3, 1941, at 4:54 a.m., U-202 sent its first torpedo into convoy SC-52 on route to Loch Ewe in Scotland. This was followed by two more at 4:58 a.m. and 5:05 a.m.. Three ships were sunk, including the Gretavale, north-east of Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland, position 51°21'N/51°45'W. The captain, 31 crew members and six gunners lost their lives. The six surviving sailors were rescued by the Canadian corvette HMCS Windflower (K155) and landed in St. John's, Newfoundland.
