Son of Captain James Edward George Jr, fisherman, and Gertrude Bishop, of Parrsboro, Nova Scotia. Half-brother of Captain Carl Morris George, fisherman.

On 29 May 1942, at 02:17 am, the Western Head was sailing unescorted when she was torpedoed by U-107 50 miles (70 km) east of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and sank in Windward Passage, position 19°57'N/74°18'W.
