His real surname is Chausowski or Szanoswcki. Jewish. Son of Abe Chausowski or Szanoswski (aka Abe Gold) and Feiga Sora Kramer (aka Fanny Sarah Kramer).

On 29 August 1940, Astra II sailed from Tyne, England, to Rimouski, Quebec, with convoy OA-204. At 1:40 a.m., she was torpedoed and sunk by U-100 148 miles (238 km) northwest of Bloody Foreland, Donegal, Ireland, position 56°09'N/12°14'W. Of her 26-man crew, 4 sailors and a gunner lost their lives. The captain and 19 crew members were rescued by the British minesweeper HMS Gleaner (N83).
