Baptized Joseph Roméo Joyal. Son of Pierre Joyal and Fébronie Ouellet (deceased in 1913), of Montréal, Québec.
He stated being born in Montréal when he enlisted.
Enlisted in the 163rd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on May 26, 1916, he sailed for Bermuda, where he arrived on the 29th. On November 28 of that year, he set sail again, stopped in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the 26th, and continued on to Great Britain, where he landed in Liverpool, England, on December 6. On January 7, 1917, he was temporarily assigned to the 10th Reserve Battalion. On April 20, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion and crossed the English Channel on the 21st, landing in Le Havre, Normandy, France. He joined his new unit, which was on leave, on May 30 in the Millencourt and Hénencourt sector. He was killed in action on July 2, 1917, during the Battle of Lens, Pas-de-Calais, on Hill 70, near Cité St-Laurent.

AIX-NOULETTE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION Pas de Calais, France
Aix-Noulette is a village in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais, about 13 kilometres south of Bethune on the main road to Arras. From Arras take the D937 towards Bethune. At Aix-Noulette, turn right at the church. The Communal Cemetery and Extension are a few hundred metres on the left side of the road to Bully-Grenay.
