On 27 August 1941, Embassage, a member of convoy OS-4 bound from Hull, England, to Bathurst, New Brunswick, then on to Pepel, Sierra Leone, was torpedoed 100 miles (161 km), at 4:26 am, by U-557 west of Achill Island, Ireland, and sunk, position 54°00'N/13°00'W. The captain, 32 sailors and 6 gunners lost their lives. After four days adrift, three sailors were rescued by the Canadian destroyer HMCS Assiniboine (I-18) and landed at Greenock, Scotland.
