Cemetery – Air Crew Plot Photo courtesy of Frans van Cappellen, The Netherlands The crew of Lancaster DS 788 was on its operational debut. They were airborne 0003 20Feb44 from Linton-on-Ouse on a mission to Leipzig, Germany. Shot down by a night-fighter from 20,000 feet and the resulting fire destroyed the rudders causing the Lancaster to crash at Kropswolde (Groningen) in the SW outskirts of Sappemeer, Holland. Also killed in the crash were the 19 yr old pilot F/O J.A.Frampton; P/Os J. J. Astles and K.Smith; and Sgt K.W.Tindall RAF Two survived: F/O G.W.Reynolds was interned in Camp L3, PoW No.3537 and F.W.C.Robertson evaded. (Source: www.lostbombers.co.uk)
