  • Mural– In a spring hailstorm in the remote and tiny village of Mount Pleasant in Merthyr Vale, Wales, the High Commissioner delivered remarks at the official unveiling of a mural painted by local schoolchildren in memory of a tragic incident in 1941, when two Canadian pilots, Sergeant Louis Goldberg and Sergeant Gerald Fenwick Manuel, flying Spitfires on a training run, collided above the village, with both killed and one plane crashing into a row-house, killing a mother and her two daughters. The High Commissioner was joined a the event by Lieutenant Colonel David Murphy, a Canadian pilot currently seconded to the Directing Staff of the Joint Command Staff College at Shrivenham. The large and brightly coloured mural, located next to the local elementary school playing field, depicts the Spitfire planes and pilots and includes a Canadian flag and Welsh Dragon.
