Son of Tom and Annie Dupuis, of St. Anselme, New Brunswick. Lionel was one of three brothers who served in World War II; the others were: Eusèbe (Joe)-a Flying Officer in the R.C.A.F., Jean (Jack)-a Lieutenant in the R.C.N.V.R. and after the war, a fourth brother, Lorenzo (Larry) served as a Merchant Seaman and then as a Flying Officer in the R.C.A.F. Aux.)

The LIER (LIERRE) BELGIAN MILITARY CEMETERY is located to the south of the town off the R16 ring road.Take the E313 which runs between Antwerp & Luik.Turn off at junction 19 Massenhoven and turn right onto the N14 towards Lier.At the junction with the ring road R16 turn right onto this and follow round to junction of the N14 again which goes to Mechelen.Turn right here towards the town on the Mechelsesteenweg.The cemetery is on the right past the 3rd turning on the right.The graves are located amongst the Belgian graves.

  • Grave Marker– Lionel Dupuis is buring in the Lierre Military Cemetery, Grave 2, Row A, Plot 2. The following info. is from The Imperial War Graves Commission publication containing the Register of the names of those who fell in the 1939-1945 War and are buried in Cemeteries in Belgium, one of which is the Lier (Lierre) Belgian Military Cemetery.  Lier (Fr. Lierre) is in the Flemish-speaking province of Antwerp, 10 1/2 miles southeast of the city of Antwerp. The Cemetery is situated on the south side of the road from Lier to Melchelen(Malines), one mile from Lier and 1 1/4 miles from the railway station.
This Cemetery contains 420 Belgian graves of the 1914-1918 War, and 42 British Common-wealth graves of the 1939-1945 War. Of these, 32 are those of men of the British Army, 9 of men of the Canadian Army, while the occupant of the remaining one is entirely unidentified.
Of the 9 Canadians, two are from Le Régiment de Maisonneuve ; Pte Riel Jobidon, son of Adrien and Mary Jobidon from Mackey's Station, Ontario,  and Lionel.  His entry in the register (on page 46) reads as follows: DUPUIS, Cpl. Lionel, Gerald, K167388. Le Régiment de Maisonneuve, Royal Canadian Infantry Corps. 1st October, 1944. Age 24. Son of Tom and Annie Dupuis, of St. Anselme, New Brunswick, Canada.  II.A.2. (Grave 2,  Row A, Plot 2.)
             We also note from the Register that the graves on either side of Lionel are occupied by the  other two regiments forming the 5th Infantry Brigade of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division~ these are II.A. I (Joseph Ambrose McDonald of the The.Calgary Highlanders. RC.I.C., parents not identified) and II.A.3(Joseph Gerald Godfrey of The Black Watch(Royal Highland Regt.) of Canada, son of Rae Godfrey and Automile Godfrey of Montreal, with the headstone bearing  the Star of David). All three died on 1st October, 1944.
