Baptized Joseph-Napoléon Brière (Paul was a name derivative of Napoléon). Son of Siméon Brière and Agnès Sévigny (deceased in 1900). His father remarried to Marguerite Demers in 1901 and died in 1905. Napoléon named his brother Ernest, of Daveluyville, Nicolet, as next of kin and heir, when he enlisted.
Suffering from an acute bronchitis, he was hospitalized in France in March 1916 and was evacuated to England two weeks later. Admitted to the 1st London General Hospital, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and died two months later.
