Location:

Brookwood is 30 miles from London (M3 to Bagshot and then A322). The main entrance to Brookwood Military Cemetery is on the A324 from the village of Pirbright. Brookwood Military Cemetery is owned by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the United Kingdom, covering approximately 37 acres. In 1917, an area of land in Brookwood Cemetery (originally The London Necropolis) was set aside for the burial of men and women of the forces of the Commonwealth and Americans, who had died, many of battle wounds, in the London district. This site was further extended to accommodate the Commonwealth casualties of the Second World War, and American, Belgian, Czech, Dutch, French and Polish plots containing the graves of Allied casualties. There are also German and Italian plots where prisoners of war lie buried.

  • Photo of Robert Lanning Procter– Additional Information courtesy of Annemarie Bruseker: For the second time during this war, tragedy has struck the home of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Procter, with the report Wednesday that their son, Major Robert L. Procter, has been killed in action in Italy. Another son, Squadron Leader Richard Campbell Procter, was killed in August, 1940, when an RCAF plane crashed in British Columbia. Major Procter was a prominent golfer in Edmonton, having won the provincial amateur championship on two occasions. He was champion at Mayfair for several years and was ranked the 9th amateur golfer in Canada in 1939. He made seven consecutive appearances in the Canadian amateur golf championships event. Selected as one of Edmonton's outstanding golfers, he qualified several times as member of Alberta's Willingdon cup team for inter-provincial competition. He also teamed with Ted West, now a prisoner of war in Germany, and Pat Fletcher in many Eaton cup challenge matches. Major Procter, a graduate in commerce from the University of Alberta, enlisted in the army in 1940. He was among the Edmonton soldiers who took part in the raid on Spizbergen in the Arctic. The officer received his early education at Brentwood College, Victoria, and worked for James Richardson and sons prior to enlisting. Besides golf, he took part in several sports in Edmonton, including badminton.
