Son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Churchill Black, of Victoria, British Columbia. Husband of Lillian A. Black, of Calgary, Alberta. Brother of Eveline, Pauline, Darothy and Katheline and J.B.

Major Black served during the First World War having enlisted 20 May 1916 at Vancouver, British Columbia with the 196th Overseas Battalion, Western Universities, British Columbia Company.

The University of British Columbia War Memorial Gymnasium honoured those that died and those that returned. The bronze plaque reads 'ERECTED TO COMMEMORATE THE SUPREME SACRIFICES AND WILLING SERVICES OF THE MEMBERS OF "D" COY 196 TH BATTALION C.E.F. WESTERN UNIVERSITIES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918'.
