Canadian Virtual War Memorial

Photo of Douglas Clark – Douglas Clark of Toronto was killed at Vimy Ridge on April 5, 1917. He lied about his age and enlisted at 15. He was at Vimy Ridge preparing for battle when his eldest brother, Alexander, reported him to the military authorities because he was underage. Douglas was ordered out of the front lines but was killed by a German shell as he was leaving. He was my great-uncle.

Document – Research related to the Nine Elms Military Cemetery, Thelus revealed that Private Clark was first listed as an "Unknown Canadian Soldier". The CWGC accepted that it must be Douglas Clark, as there was a postcard in the helmet on top of the grave, stating it was believed to be his grave. Additional information was reported on a Corporal W. J. Clark of the 1st Canadian Motor Machine Gun Brigade and shoulder titles C/10 (10th Battalion). A linkage of these mentions has not been found at this time.
