On 6 December 1917, the Asaba was sailing from Newport, England, to Le Havre, Normandy, France, when 2 miles (3.2 km) south-south-west of Lizard, Cornwall, England, in the English Channel, she was torpedoed at around 11 am by UC-17 and sank, position 49°57'N/05°15'W. The captain and 15 crew members lost their lives.
