On 16 September 1918, the Serula was en route from Manchester, England, to Rouen, Normandy, France, when she was torpedoed by UB-64 13.5 miles (22 km) north-east of the rocky promontory Strumble Head off Pencaer, in the St George's Channel, Wales. The attack killed 17 people, including the captain.
