On 20 December 1917, the Waverley was en route from Cardiff, Wales, to Port Said, Egypt, when she was torpedoed by U-35 33 miles (53 km) north-east of Cape Ivi, Algeria, in the Alboran Sea, and sunk with 22 crew members, position 36°37'N/00°33'E.
