Son of Major William McSpadden, C.M.P., and Mary Hancock McSpadden, of Calgary, Alberta.

His father Major William McSpadden, died on December 19, 1918 while serving with the Canadian Corps Military Police.

Sains-en-Gohelle is a mining village 20 kilometres north of Arras on the road to Bethune. Fosse No.10 is a pithead and group of miners' houses south of the village.

The Memorial Tablet has the following dedication:  IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE CONGREGATION OF CENTRAL METHODIST CHURCH AND SUNDAY SCHOOL WHO SERVED IN  THE GREAT WAR.  The Memorial Tablet was unveiled on Sunday, July 1st, 1923.
  • Central Methodist Memorial Tablet– Detail of World War One Memorial Tablet at Central Methodist (United) Church in Calgary. There are 204 names in total listed. The central section lists 36 names on the Roll of Honour while the two outside sections list the men who served and survived the war.
  • Photo of William McSpadden– Although the initials indicate G W instead of W H, I believe this is the same man.  The book from where the photo comes from, They Gathered at the River, the history of Central United Church, Calgary, has his name as this, but on the bronze plaque, it is WH...might have been an error on the editor's part...
