Son of Ludger Lemay (deceased in 1902) and Léda Béland (remarried to Ludger Phaneuf in 1905 and deceased in 1909). He declared his godfather, Joseph Lemay, from Lotbinière, as next of kin, and his aunt, Antonie Lemay, from Concord, New Hampshire, has heiress in his military will, but she died less than six months later.

Wancourt is a village about 8 kilometres south-east of Arras. It is 2 kilometres south of the main road from Arras to Cambrai. The WANCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY is a short distance south-east of the village just off the D 35 road.
