Baptized Thomas-Joseph-Zéphirin Gagné. Son of Zéphirin Gagné (deceased in 1902) and Elizabeth Osborn. He stated being born in 1898 when he enlisted and he named his sister Alberta « Bertha » (wife of Edward Gilmet), of Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, as next of kin.
