Son of Louis and Bertha Boettcher of Magnetawan, Ontario, Canada. Brother of Julius, Frederick, William, Treisca, Annie, Mary, Emma, Minnie and Matilda Wurm. William joined the service because he didn't want his brother, Hugh, to be alone overseas.
The family name was originally spelled Boettcher, but the army thought that it was too Germany sounding. An obvious discussion ensued which can be evidenced on the front page of Hugh's attestation papers. Embarked Halifax 1 November 1916, disembarked Liverpool on 11 November 1916. On 5 December transferred to the 162 Battalion from the 36 Battalion. Died at Moore Bucks Hospital, Sutcliffe, England.
Private Boettcher is also commemorated on a memorial in Magnetawan, Ontario having made the supreme sacrifice.
Commemorated on Page 203 of the First World War Book of Remembrance. Request a copy of this page. Download high resolution copy of this page.
