His son, Lance Corporal Avard Forsyth Smith, died on April 8, 1918 while serving with the The King's (Liverpool Regiment) 19th Bn.
On 30 May 1918, the Wanata was en route from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Queenstown, Sierra Leone, when she was torpedoed by the U-101 42 nautical miles (48 miles/78 km) south-south-east of Kinsale Heard, Ireland. Eight sailors lost their lives.
