Son of Robert Mercer and Ellen Mercer of Cork, Munster, Ireland.
On 15 March 1918, the Armonia was sailing south-east of Corsica in the Mediterranean when it was torpedoed by UC-67 near Porquerolles Island, in position 42°33'N/06°46'E. Seven of the crew lost their lives.
