  • Grave Marker– This photograph was taken in Ross Bay Cemetery, Victoria, B. C., Canada. When Pvt Irwin died, the Battle of the Somme (as it would eventually become known) was almost exactly four weeks old. I wonder if he thought it would lead to victory, or if he was one of the few at that time who began to recognize it as the tragedy that it was.
