At the head of Cadet Ludford's grave, in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Barrie, Ontario, stands this private monument. Its inscription is badly weathered and only barely legible: "JOHN EDWARD LUDFORD BORN IN CARACAS VENEZUELA FEB. 1, 1898 KILLED IN FLYING ACCIDENT AT CAMP BORDEN SEPT. 18, 1917". (Image taken by Gregory J. Barker of Barrie in 2012. This image may be copied and used without further permission.)

This report of Cadet Ludford's death appeared at page 5 in the September 20, 1917 issue of the Barrie Examiner newspaper (Barrie, Ontario). It includes a couple of obvious inaccuracies, in that it identifies Ludford as a member of the "American Flying Corps" (rather than the Royal Flying Corps) whose hometown was "Baracas" (rather than Caracas). Note: Camp Hoare was the Royal Flying Corps airfield at Camp Borden, west of Barrie, Ontario, named after Lieutenant-Colonel (later Brigadier-General) C.G. Hoare, the commanding officer of the RFC in Canada.
