Son of Charles W. and Louisa Brett Tinling, of Montreal, Quebec. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University, and had passed with honours in his third year in Medicine. He was Sergeant-Major of No. 3 Canadian Hospital for nearly two years, and then took his commission in the 42nd Royal Highlanders of Canada.

Barlin is a village about 11 kilometres south-west of Bethune on the D188, between the Bethune-Arras and Bethune-St. Pol roads, about 6.5 kilometres south-east of Bruay. The BARLIN COMMUNAL CEMETERY and EXTENSION lie to the north of the village on the D171 road to Houchin.
