He is shown with his Grandmother, my Great Grandmother, Anne Thompson Martin and his sister, my Grandmother, Carrie Elizabeth Dickson on the steps of their home in the Perth-Sharbot Lake Region of Central Ontario Canada. Russel was born on August 7, 1899 (1901 Canadian Census) and NOT in 1897 as his Attestation Papers show. He was only 16 years old when he joined. He died on April 12, 1917 of wounds received on Vimy Ridge on April 9, 1917. Russel was 17 years old.

Russel was mortally wounded on April 9, 1917 (Easter Monday) during the Canadian taking of the German stronghold of Vimy Ridge. He was shot in the right thigh and died on April 12, 1917 at the Number 22 Casualty Clearing Station. He went overseas with the 130th Battalion and then to France with the 3rd Canadian Infantry Battalion.
