Photo of Samuel Henry Brown – Samuel Henry Brown was born in Clinton Ontario on March 1, 1891 the 6th and youngest child, to John Brown and Mary Ann Pennebaker. When his older brother Frances (Frank) Brown moved west around 1900 to Manitoba old 1906 to 1914 postcards indicate that Sam and his brothers Charlie and Ernie traveled back and forth from Clinton, Ontario to Eden, Manitoba to work as farm hands and labourers. Sam also picked up work in London and Petrolia. Sammuel Henry Brown first joined the Canadian militia and later at Clinton Ontario on December 6th, 1915 he enlisted with the 161st Battalion of Huron County. His unit set sail on October 30, 1916 aboard the SS Lapland and arrived in England November 11, 1916. Sammuel transferred to the Canadian Machine Gun Corps, 4th Machine Gun Company upon arrival. His WW1 pocket diary indicates he fought at Vimy Ridge on Easter Monday April 9th, 1917. It states, "we went over the top, at the vimy ridge". There is much dialogue in the diary up to June 3rd, 1917 when Sammuel indicates he is at rest camp at Gouy-Servins France for a month and then the diary remains quiet and unused until August 10th, 1917. On this day, his last entry, it states, "party gassed well (while?) coming to the line, was caught with pants down". On August 20th, 1917 Sammuel Henry Brown was admitted to #7 Canadian General Hospital Etaples France dangerously ill with gunshot wounds to his face. He died later that day. Sam was 26 years old. He is buried at the Etaples Military Cemetery in France in Plot XXII R. 16A God Bless You Samuel Henry Brown Forever Remembered...
