Baptized Jules-Édouard Villeneuve. Son of Adrien Villeneuve and Marie Bourgeois (d. 1910), of Montreal, Quebec. He attested that he was born in 1897 when he enlisted and he had named his aunt and godmother, Miss Rose-Délima Bougeois as next of kin.
