Son of William and Theresa Wilkinson, of Toronto, Ontario.
His brothers served during the First World War. Reuben died on April 17, 1917 while serving with the Canadian Infantry (New Brunswick Regiment) and William died on February 6, 1919 while serving with the Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment).

The Wilkinson family lost three sons as a result of their military service during the first World War and shortly afterwards. Pte. Reuben Wilkinson, 413097, 26th Battalion (New Brunswick), died on April 17, 1917. Sapper John Wilkinson, 2499683, Canadian Railway Troops, died on August 29, 1918. Pte.
