Location:

VALENCIENNES (ST.ROCH) COMMUNAL CEMETERY is situated on the north-east side of the town, about 1.5 kilometres from the centre. It is on the north side of the road to Bruay-sur-L'Escaut.

  • Photo of Monty MacLeod– Monty MacLeod in December 1917 wearing the uniform of the 236th CEF (MacLean Kilties). He and his brother Murdock had joined this battalion in Boston, MA USA.  After arriving in England, they
were transferred to the 72nd CEF (Seaforth Highlanders of Canada).  Monty was killed in the attack on
Valenciennes, France on 1 Nov. 1918.  Murdock was wounded 30 Sept 1918 and was sent to England.  He survived and returned to Quincy, MA where he lived until his death in 1972 at age 79.
