Son of James and Annie Carss, of 22, The Square, Craster, Lesbury, Northumberland. Brother of Daniel and John William Carss.

Daniel died on October 17, 1917 while serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves and John William Carss died on February 15, 1918 while serving with the Royal Naval Reserves.

Both brothers are commemorated on Chatham Naval Memorial.
