Son of Robert John and Thelma Ruby (née Dixon) Arding, of Toronto, Ontario. Brother of Doris Margaret, Norman Douglas and Lawrence Gerald. He attended Silverthorn Public School, in Toronto, Ontario. Private Arding joined the RCA Service Corps as he was interested in becoming a cook.
