Prior to joining the NWMP, Sergeant Donaldson was a farmer and cheesemaker. He was promoted to Sergeant on May 1, 1907. He drowned when his police boat was attacked by a herd of walruses off Marble Island, Hudson Bay, Northwest Territories. His body was never found.
